Holiday Adventures and the After Christmas Blues

I am not a fan of winter. I don't think I will ever like cold short days and long dark nights. And really, I shouldn't complain because this has been the best winter I have experienced in Denmark. But still, the dark days can add to the feeling of low energy. I miss my sunshine....

December was a busy month. The nice thing about December is that it's the holiday time. So, you do not notice all of the darkness. Everything is "hyggeligt." There are candles and lights everywhere, the holiday smells and sights fill every the entire city. Everyone is in good spirits. Danes know how to do holidays right. Always full of tradition and family and friends.

I had another Danish Christmas this year. It was a nice time with friends and adopted family. I got to experience more traditions- good food, lots of laughs, and some dancing around the Christmas tree. It was a nice second place, when I can not be with my family.

During the Christmas break in the cafe I took a trip to Poland. I visited Poznan. We calculated that it must have been about 4 years since I was last in Poznan. I had not returned there after I moved to Krakow. There was something familiar, yet so foreign to return there. In a lot of ways all the sights and feel of the city was so normal and so easy for me to adapt back too. But, I have lost the little of the language I knew and all of the sounds around me had me feeling out of place. But, the best thing about the visit was that I got to stay with one of my best friends. And it has been years since we have been together! We got to be lazy and rest and enjoy just sharing our lives together again. It was the getaway I needed.

New Years came and went in a blur of laughter, dancing, and friends. We had a very cheesy dinner and then joined a church party with a lot of young people. I got to "jump" into the new year and light some big sparklers! Being a deprived Californian, I did not have much of a chance to set off fireworks. I completely enjoy them every year and this year, in the city, I got to experience the explosions days before and after the new year.

January has brought a month of changes in the cafe. We have readjusted to new workers, new volunteers, and new responsibilities. It has taken time to get into a new flow. But, I think we have finally found a system the regular workers are comfortable with. We have had some awesome events. We had a very yummy Girls Night In last week filled with yummy chocolate fondue, and yes chocolate oreos are awesome dipped in fondue. A couple of weeks ago we had a great game night. It was a lot of fun. We had a wonderful time of competition and teasing. Things are going well and we are keeping really busy. January has been a good month to get us back on the right track. If only it was not so gloomy outside....

A Season of Advent

The days are getting shorter and shorter, while the nights become long. This first part of winter in Denmark is known as the “cozy” time. Homes and cafes are aglow with candles and Christmas lights. Friends and family gather to share some warmth. Our café is no exception. We have decorated and filled the café with Christmas. We are getting ready for the next two weeks that promise to be crazy busy with the final work before we close for Christmas. I am especially excited to a part of all the parties this next week, even if it means working crazy hours.

November brought us a number of good weeks. We have finally hired some extra help. We have a volunteer that we hired to work 20 hours a week, the time our manager is not allowed to work. It has helped relieve stress in the kitchen. We are still getting new volunteers every week. It’s nice to have so many people interested in helping, but it is also hard to train new people almost everyday. It feels like we are always training people and are lacking help from volunteers that are trained. But, each new volunteer is a new connection and a new chance to witness.

We have entered the advent season. A time of waiting, and preparing for the gift that is to come. I think that is where our cafe is at as well. There have been rumors and talks of changes. Different uncertainties talked about between us all. What is the future going to hold? Are we going to make it? There is so little energy left heading into these last few weeks before our Christmas holidays. And then after the holidays, what will happen? A time of waiting, waiting to see where God is going to lead us. Personally, this fall has challenged me to look my call to this cafe right in the face and choose to respond, no matter what dreams, or hopes are taken way, no matter how much physical or emotional pain I face, I will remain faithful to the call. And now in the start of advent when we think about the future promises I am reminded why I have to make those decisions. Because we can not truly receive all of God's promises if we do not empty all of our self out first. I must give-up everything to truly experience all that God has in store for me. And I think that is where God is taking this cafe.  We have been pushed and challenged to look at what we are doing and why. We have been challenged to consider and learn where God is calling each of us. And now we enter a time of waiting. A time where the future is unknown. But, as we continue to remain faithful, God will bring about His future, His plans, and His promises. We just need to continue to prayfully wait in this advent season, for the promise of God. May we all receive the true gift of God's love and God's revival in our hearts and churches, after this time of waiting in the darkness.

Life Keeps Happening

Every time I try to write an update I feel like there is so much to write, yet not enough… It seems there is always something happening in the café. Today I looked at my calendar to try and put the next few weeks into perspective and I thought, wow how I am going to do so much. But, isn't that a great thing? That we have so much life in the café that we are having a hard time keeping up?! Our holiday season is starting and we have events and a concert and parties galore scheduled.  Many opportunities to connect with people and make a difference.

I have started having weekly Danish lessons. I have a private teacher that is meeting me once a week in the café. This provides a new challenge for me. But, I am glad that I have a teacher that will work with me one on one and will go at a pace slow enough for me to understand. After all, learning languages is not exactly my gift.

I had an interesting experience with a customer this past week. A woman came in and recognized me and I wasn't sure how I knew her. After a brief conversation we realized she taught for a couple months, the first Danish class I was in. Not sure if she counted it as a failure that I was talking to her in English. But, after a short explanation of where I have been the past 2 years she saw why my energies have been devoted elsewhere. We went on with our day, me taking care of typical café business, her enjoying her time relaxing in the café. When she left she made it a point to say goodbye to me and tell me what she thought about our café. She was very impressed by all we had and all we were doing for the community. She left the café feeling like she had truly found a place to rest and relax and where it ok for her to bring her daughter. She said she couldn't say what exactly what it was, but there was something here that made her feel at peace. And of course my thoughts were- it’s because we have asked God to be here. Another contact made, another life affected when she was just looking for a place to have coffee.

And that’s why we keep doing what we are doing, slowly building relationship after relationship. Just waiting for the moment we can, the reason this place is so great, is because we are here to be a blessing, we are here to show you real love, we are here to help you find real life.

Fall Lessons

Today I ran 4 miles. I have a confession to make. I have been very inconsistent with my running since my last race. I had weeks when I would get back on track and then I would fall off again when life got busy and I was tired in the morning, the cycle has continued for months. But the past couple weeks I have been consistent. I think moving and finally settling into a place where I feel home helps. And so today I made it 4 miles. I have written many sermons and lessons while running. It's when my mind wanders and is free to just flow. I am now living close to a big park that has a number of different trails that cross through the park and eventually end at a small bay. I have been picking random trails and just following them until I end up at the water and then I turn around and head back into the city. It has been a nice pattern. And then today I chose the trail of memories. You know these trails. I had walked this one before, with someone else and I ran passed the spots where special memories took place. But like life those memories that use to bring joy now bring pain. And as I rounded a corner coming out of the trees to the water I was blasted with a cold misty wind that reminded me- winter is soon around the corner. Turning my run into an example of life...

This Fall has been hard. Each week seems to bring moments where just breathing becomes an accomplishment. Personal pain has surged through my life. Busyness of cafe work has built up and created extra stress. And some days it feels like all I can do is just hold on. Just make it through the day accomplishing all of the tasks on the to-do list. But it is in those moments when we learn why we do what we do and where God is. Like my run this morning, I could choose to collapse in pain when I see the hard memories or I can continue down the trail one foot after another. Or when I turn the corner and face a blast of cold air I can let it push me back into hiding or I can continue on- one foot in front of the other. Whenever we are challenged in our life and ministry we have a choice. Do we let it knock us down or do we continue on, one foot in front of the other. Each trusting step guiding us forever forward and closer to the goal. But, we will never be able to continue if we don't know why we are running, why we are doing what we are doing. When life gets busy it becomes so easy to just go through the motions, accomplishing the tasks we have to and remembering to breathe, but we can not let ourselves get caught up in these situations because life is meant to be so much more than just going through the motions, just trying to survive.

Life is meant to be lived and it can only be lived fully if we are completely in the center of God’s will. The only way we can continue forward is when we know for certain what God is asking us to do. There have been a couple moments the past 2 months where I have seriously contemplated my call. Why am I in Denmark, working in a café? Why do I live without the regular safety nets that most people in their 30s have established? And why do I continue to walk this road alone? And as always my answer is, because God said so 3 years ago and He hasn’t changed the call on me yet, so I must continue to be faithful. Sometimes that faithfulness is easier then other times. When life is flowing smoothly, the run is on even ground and the knees don't have pain, its easy to remember to be faithful. But, then there are those moments when you feel forced to choose between something you love and the call God has made so clear to you. The moments where the pain of loss almost makes you consider abandoning your call. And that is when you have to just continue one foot in front of the other fighting the wind and pushing forward. And that is what God has challenged me with the past few months. Did I really mean what I said when I stood on a mountaintop overlooking an African valley or sitting in an office after a Sunday night mission service. Those big moments in my life where I said- ok God, I don't know what is going to happen, I don't know what you are doing, but I will go, one foot in front of the other I will choose You and the call you have placed in my life. And once again this Fall I have been challenged to say, God I don't know what You are doing, and I don't understand, but I will continue to work because that is what you have asked of me.

And so through the stress, busyness, and pain of life I have been reminded that it’s not about what is easiest or feels good, it is about continuing to remain faithful even when I don't see how God is working. And even though I don't know when the trail ends or even when it will become easier, I must continue on one foot in front of the other and build my strength in Christ, one mile after another.

Fall Blessings of Growth

It is Fall here in Copenhagen and this week is the Fall Break in all the schools. The breeze has been crisp and leaves are slowly changing. Pumpkins are showing up and new recipes are being thought about.
Nyhavn Harbor Copenhagen

Things in the cafe are going full swing. Our business has picked up dramatically and our weeknight are becoming busier and busier. The team has also added some new activities to help with this. One couple has added a children's song time to their evening shift. And another has added a Disney movie night to theirs. Both have shown great response from the families in the area. This past Friday we had a whole room of tables reserved for the movie night.

Our other ministries have been flowing as well. A few weeks ago at Girls Night In we had a record number of woman who came to learn how to decorate mini-tower cakes. It was a great night. We even had some girls who came because I handed them a flier in the shop. The men have also started a 5 week study group where they are going through material on how to be a better husband/man. It is a mixed group of Christian and non-Christian, some are married, dating, and single. They claim everything shared there is too secret, but all express it has been a great time of learning and fellowship.

Last night we had a volunteer hang-out night. It was a great time of fellowship and getting to know each other. Our group is so diverse. We had at least 6 different nationalities represented there. As well as volunteers from the church and volunteers that have joined us from our website add. We enjoyed cakes from different places, and food from our international roots. It was a great time of fellowship and sharing with each other.

God is working in Sweet Surrender Copenhagen and it has been inspiring to share with so many different people and to be able to make a difference in this city, in our neighbors, and in our volunteers through one cup of coffee at a time.

Back in Rhythm and Facing Unknowns

We are back and running like normal again. All of a sudden everything has changed. People are back from holiday, kids are back in school and we are up and running again. It has been nice to be busy again. I have missed the action in the cafe. We have also been gaining more and more new volunteers. Most of them are non-Christians that have responded to our ad online. It is great getting to know each story and working with each of them. We often get to have conversations about why we started the cafe and our faith. It is also nice to have the extra hands when the workload increases.

September is bringing the start of everything again. Our cafe calendar is becoming full with all kinds of plans.  We are starting Girls Night In and will even be adding a Men's Night. We recently had a concert. A small choir from the Methodist church came and sang some songs. It was a nice evening and a great way to connect with new people. I am excited to once again be busy with monthly ministries again.

I am still almost homeless. We have some leads on an apartment this winter. But things are still up on the air until then. I am daily writing many people about places to live. I am not sure what will happen at this point. I don't like this feeling of not knowing where I will live and being without a place for me to unpack.

So, as the cafe is going back to normal, I am living in uncertainty in my own life. But, I continue on in this rhythm of work and see where I will land.

Summertime, Livin' Easy.....

I am back...
I have been back in Copenhagen for almost a month now. It has been a great joy to be back in the cafe again. As much as I enjoy visiting family and friends, I love my work.

July is vacation month in Denmark. I think most of the city's inhabitants clear out and the city becomes full of tourist. The sun is actually out and we have warm temps. As much as I love the warmth and the month of sunshine, this travel month is not so great for the cafe. We have had a lot of slow, hot days. I would take the crazy days of the fall over this anytime. But, soon we will be back to regular and things will explode in the cafe again. I did get to sport a little bit of U. S. pride on the 4th of July. We were able to wear our stars & stripes and have a little "American" style dinner. But, like every other year- I really miss the fireworks!

We have been contacted by a number of new volunteers lately. We have posted our need for help on a community website. This has resulted in many new volunteers. Each week we are meeting new people and scheduling them for their first shifts. This has been a great experience because most of them are not Christians, but neighbors from the community. Now our ministry filled has really grown in the area of the volunteers we are working next to. It seems each time we have a new volunteer we get an opportunity to share Christ with them, when we explain why we do what we do. I am excited to see how this opportunity develops into more and ministries.

Things are going great and I am excited to be back in Copenhagen and Cafe Sweet Surrender!

Tillykke et års fødselsdag :D

Sweet Surrender Copenhagen made it, 1 year! YEA!!! Congratulations to all of us who have left our blood, sweat, and tears in the cafe. It has been a great week of remembering for me. I was going through old pictures from the past year and sending them on to be made into posters. It is amazing to see how much we have done in a year. Now I understand why I feel like I am busy all the time!! :)

God has really blessed us and all the work we have done for Him. When we first started the work on Mexico bar we thought that we would never be able to change it into such a beautiful cafe. The more we built, the more problems we found. But, we kept building. And then we opened and had such a slow summer and wondered if business would pick up or if we even made great contacts. Now we are always looking for more volunteers because we can be too busy. We have by far exceeded our daily income goal for the year.  Plus we have added our volunteers to our ministry list. We are getting more and more international volunteers, many who have no connection to the church. Now our witnessing field has expanded from not only customers, but volunteers as well. We have had so many events and connections with people. Our church has been set and we are meeting weekly and growing closer and closer as a team.

Yesterday we celebrated all day- handing out cake and frozen bananas to guests. We also had a concert in the evening with 2 young christian artists. It was a wonderful night. All of the team was together to help and celebrate. The cafe was filled with constant joy and laughter. It is such a blessing for us to gather all together. God has really been answering our prayers this year.

Congratulations to us! We made it!!!

Moving, Packing, Running, and Fundraising

2 1/2 weeks, that is all I have left in the white house. 2 1/2 weeks before the extreme panic kicks in. Changes are always a challenge for me.

I am moving soon, finally. I have not been living in a healthy environment and I have wanted to break free since October. Now I finally have a place to go to, for 3 months this summer. I will be living in central Copenhagen. No more train rides and commuting and late night trains! i will be a 15 minute bike ride away from everything! am so thankful for the volunteer who is giving us her apartment to stay in, while she is away. So, that means before I leave for the States, I have to be moved out of my room in the white house.  And when I return to Denmark, I will be living in beautiful central Copenhagen!

I am running again, always running. It really is my excitement and life force. I an training for a 10k this time around. I will be racing on May 31st. I am excited because I will be getting to run with almost my whole family and some women from my sisters small group. Also, they will be asking for people to sponsor them as a fundraiser for me. I am so excited to get to run this race with them. If you are interested in running with us or sponsoring one of us, send me a message.

So, why am I going to the States for 6 weeks??? I really don't want to leave my work in Denmark... But the bank account says I must. I will be in California and the Chicago area.  So, far I am only speaking in 3 churches in the Chicago area. I am really in need of churches to share in the NorCal area. It has become a matter of great stress for me. I need to raise $8,000 to continue my work in Copenhagen for another year. If you are interested in helping me,  and hearing what God has been doing in Copenhagen, send me a message.

Stay tune for the next blog, in the near future.... We will be celebrating Sweet Surrender Copenhagen's 1 year birthday! :D

Spring has Sprung...

Spring has arrived!!! At least I hope it has. Last night was our time change. This is always a little bummer for me, and not for the reason you may think. I have never understood those who struggle with only an hour difference with the time change. It's only an hour... but I guess only those who understand my sleeping patterns (or my lack of sleeping) would understand why 1 hour doesn't throw me off. The reason I don't like time change is that the US time and European time changes do not fall on the same night. So, that means for a week or two I am one hour closer to my family, which seems to make a huge difference in the ability to catch my nieces and nephews on skype, before I am passing out for the night. But, time change has sprung us forward and I am enjoying the last few rays of sunlight at 7:30pm. It's amazing how a little more sun can change the perspective and energy level. I have also started to train for the 10k I will be running while I am home. This week was a challenge getting back to a running plan, but it's the good kind of challenge when you feel a relief and freedom in running again.

What does spring mean for the cafe?? It means we pull out all of the outside furniture and sneak outside for breaks in the sunshine. So far this month has proven that each week is inconsistent. It seems that whenever we think that we have figured out a pattern with our customers, it changes. We must accept the inconsistency. But, we have had more people in the evenings, there is something about having sun that keeps people out in the evenings. This is a good thing for us! :) We have been making a lot of contacts with families in the evenings. We have also been bonding with our volunteers and as a team. The atmosphere in the cafe has lightened and even when we are really busy their is still an attitude of joy and fun and friendship. And this attitude, I think, has spread to our customers as well. The mother groups have become so comfortable with us and the cafe that they almost treat it as their own living room. They lounge on the couches and babies are crawling everywhere. Obviously this is both good and bad. But, I think it proves the need for a place like ours, a place where people can feel at home, welcomed, and comfortable. We also have a number of our volunteers who find this like home as well. It has often become a place where we hang-out and enjoy being together in fellowship in the evenings. Ahhh Spring... everyone happy and feeling the freedom from the dark winter.

Time Flies.......

Time flies when you are....... having fun? doing ministry? extra busy?
Whatever the reason, time flies by. Today I actually opened up my blog and found that it has been 6 months since I have written, six months!!!! Where in the world did fall and winter in Denmark go? It seems to have zoomed by like that summer vacation does for a child. Today is spring in Copenhagen, the air is fresh, the sun is nice and the long over due blue sky is showing. In the midst of winter I was not seeing this time fly, but everyone knows my strong dislike for cold, snow, and ice. Luckily we did not have too much of that this year. But, now it is spring and the sun and warmth is returning (if only for a day). So, what has been happening in my life here in Denmark?? So much can happen in 6 months.

I spent this weekend in Oslo, Norway at our Portuguese speaking church there. We had our Scandinavian District Assembly. I was privileged to be the representative from Sweet Surrender. With this privilege comes the task of reporting to the district what has happened this year. And when I stood in front of all the important people all the facts of the business and events flew out the window and the stories of the people came out. The different people that we have met through the last year, the stories of how their lives have been changed by walking through the doors of Sweet Surrender and how our lives are changed because we have been able to minister to them. Because isn't that the point?? I could write or talk for a long time about all the hours we work, all our food, drinks, and how much money we make. I can list the different project groups we have started, the different places our income has supported, but in the long run none of that matters, the people matter. And so what have I been doing the past  months (besides obviously not updating my blog). I have been standing behind a bar making coffee, in a kitchen helping make food, cleaning, helping plan/throw parties/vents, helping organize a church, teaching, preaching, counseling, but most importantly- getting to know people and trying to affect their lives. So, when I reported to the district I shared about the neighbors who I have talked to about Christ and the church. I talked about the people who walk in off the street and become volunteers because of the community they feel in the cafe. And that is why we have built Sweet Surrender in Copenhagen, not to be another non-profit cafe, not just to be a place where mother groups can relax and be free (which are all wonderful things). But, we built it to be a place where people meet Christ, where people come face to face with real love and acceptance. The team has worked really hard to create that place in the last year. I think we finally have arrived, our customers, neighbors, and volunteers come back because they know we are different and they want that. Soon, they will realize it is really Christ they want and we are here to give them that!

Where Did My Summer Go???

Wow! It has been a really long time since I have updated my blog or even communicated what has been happening here in Denmark. I can't believe it is already September and I keep thinking, what happened to my summer? When did it become September?!? There is so much that has happened, that I am not even sure where to begin. So, lets go through the highlights of the past two months.

I have been working a lot of hours in the cafe. It is hard when we first open and are still trying to figure out our patterns and business. July was a really slow month for us. We had a lot of days with not very much business at all. That was frustrating, but I think it was also a blessing because all of the cafe team members were on vacation. It made it a little easier to work extra hours for them when we were not crazy busy. August was also slow in the beginning, but the past couple weeks business has been growing and we are having busier and busier days. This is great, we are beginning to bring in the amount we need to stay afloat. I have enjoyed my work hours in the cafe behind the bar and in the kitchen. We have some great volunteers from the Greve church, that are a lot of fun to work with. Also, we have met a lot of new people and have regular customers now. Daily we have to opportunity to talk about what we are doing and why. We have a number of people interested in us and that is great.

We had a Work and Witness team come and help us out in July. They were a wonderful group to have. They started the work in our activity room, cleaned out 2 storage rooms, and did an evening childrens activity. It was such a blessing to be with them and to share Copenhagen and the cafe ministry with them. We were not able to finish the activity room, but that is what happens when you have certain things that have to be dealt with by professionals and paperwork. However, they made a huge dent in the work. As always it is an encouragement for me to have others with the heart for mission work around. I really connected with some on the team and they were a true blessing to have here.

We have started weekly church services. We meet every Saturday evening after closing. This has ben a great time to worship, pray, and encourage each other as a small group. This last Saturday we got to pray over one woman who is coming and struggling with alcoholism and she shared with us that we were the only family she. She also, visits Julia and I every day in the cafe.

Last week, I had visitors from Poland. They are the current volunteers there. It was exciting to share what is happening in Copenhagen and hear about the cafes I worked in before. They were a great encouragement for me as well. It is nice to be able to share openly and discuss the struggles we face as volunteers and the ministry. It is nice to have others to share with. I also, enjoyed showing them my beautiful Copenhagen.

There are a lot of things happening this fall. Now that we have a balance in our work hours we can focus on starting more activities and groups in the cafe. I will be starting a women's group and a young adult group. Also, I will continue with working with the youth at the Greve church. I am excited to see where God is going to lead us this fall.

I had a wonderful experience last Monday. I performed a baptism service in Sweden. I baptized 2 women who are meeting with the couple starting a ministry in the Malmo area. We drove out to a lake and braved the very cold water! It was a very simple and relaxed time. It was a gathering of friends and family. Both women shared their hearts and how they are wanting to work with the ministry we are starting there. I was blessed to be a part of their great act of faith. Exciting things are happening in Sweden!

It has been a crazy summer and I can not believe it is already September! But, this fall has so much in store for the cafe and ministry! I am excited to see where God leads me and the work in the cafe!

Keeping Busy

The shop is now running in full swing. I think I have gotten into a good pattern of life and the shop. That is if you can ever be in a full pattern working in a cafe ministry. We have our days of up and downs. There still does not seem to be a steady pattern of customers, but we have a good mix of busy days and slow days. This weekend was a big exciting weekend for us.

Friday, we were featured in one of the top newspapers in Denmark. A tough food critic gave our show 5 out of 6 stars. The article talks about our concept of being volunteers, how great our brunch was, and how well we fit our target group. It compliments that we think about our clients and really do have items that are great for kids. The next day we had 3 different families come in and congratulate us on our review and order brunches. Already business was boosted by a positive review. However, a local politician did not feel so positive about us and wrote some provoking messages on our facebook page and his facebook page questioning our true agenda. He is against Christianity and tried to attack what we were doing, though he has never come into the shop or spoken with any of us. But, this is what we can expect face in Denmark, or in any post-Christian society. You can see the online part of the article here (but it is all in Danish)- Sweet Surrender Review

Saturday, we started our first church service in the cafe. For now it was cafe team members and our D.S. and his wife. It was a great time of sharing and worshiping together. For now we are keeping our services simple, but will build on them later. It is important for us to take time in prayer for the cafe, the team, and the ministry we are doing.

Sunday, was also another big day for us. Part of our non-profit, volunteer work is that we have chose to help a community group called Mother Help. This group supports single mothers who are having a hard time providing for their children. We have committed to throwing 1 birthday party a month for a child in these families. Yesterday was our first party to support this group. It was a mother, her 11 year old daughter (the birthday girl) and 18 of her friends. We decorated the cafe, served hot-dogs and cake, and played some games with the kids. We also gave her a gift. Both, the mother and daughter felt very appreciative of what we did for her. But, for me the biggest high-light was working with our friend. She is an older woman who lives above us, she use to get drunk everyday in the bar we took over. She has some problems in her life and is very lonely. We have spent many hours talking with her and trying to encourage her. We invited her to come and help us with the party. She showed up Sunday all excited and ready to do whatever she could. She was smiling and laughing the entire time while she helped with dishes and decorating and serving the kids. I loved how seeing how just giving her the opportunity to help someone else made such a difference in her attitude.

It was a very busy weekend for me. I am tired and struggling with finding the energy to head into another stressful week. But, it was a good weekend. Things are getting better and better in the cafe and God is working through all the challenges!

Contentment

I am happy.... :)

In two days it will be our 1 month anniversary for the cafe. So far we have 50 volunteers giving some time in the cafe. We have started collecting coffee and snacks for Cafe Night Light (a state church ministry dedicated to helping woman leave prostitution). We are also in the process of getting Bibles, and the Jesus film for this ministry. Next month we have scheduled our first Mother Help birthday party (we are throwing birthday parties for children in poor single mother homes). We have another of visitors to the shop each day. Most of our visitors are mother groups and parents who are impressed with our play area. And in 2 months a Work and Witness team will be here to help us build the children's room. Things are going very well for us.

I have been thinking a lot about my future and ministry and what I am doing. And I truly love working in Denmark. I enjoy the ministry, the team I work with, the church I am connected to, and the friends I have made. I think God is about to do something big here and I am excited to be here and be apart of it.

Ministry Opportunities

Sweet Surrender Copenhagen in not only trying to start a church and be a blessing to our community, we are also working as a non-profit cafe trying to support foundations in our area. One of these foundations we have chosen to support is called Night Life Cafe. This ministry is connected to a State Church in our neighborhood. They work with bringing women off of the street and out of a life of prostitution. Our cafe has committed to support them in 2 ways. First, we will do a food drive in our shop, asking people to donate coffee and cookies that will be served to the women when they come into Night Life Cafe. Also, we are trying to raise funds for Bibles for them to hand-out. Because most of the women are not from Denmark, we need Bibles written in English, or Eastern European languages. We are really excited to help with this ministry. We have learned that there are a couple brothels on the street next to us, so this is a ministry that directly affects the area we are working in. If you are interested in helping us raise money, or have Bibles you can donate, please contact me at katie_rae27@yahoo.com.

Opening and Adjusting

We are open!!!! A week and a half ago we opened Sweet Surrender Copenhagen with a party and 3 days of specials. The following week we tried to get into the swing of things, trying to figure out how much we needed to buy and produce and train volunteers. It has been some busy times. And even though right now there is not a lot of sleep, and a lot of busy work, things are good. It is exciting to be working in a shop again and talking with people. Planning our activities and groups that will be done in the shop. Also, planning to have a work and witness team this summer to build our children's room is busy work, but exciting. There are so many things ahead and so many things to do to keep going right now, it can all be overwhelming and so adjusting needs to take place.

Through all of the hours I am spending just trying to make the daily business happen in the shop, I am finding I don't have time to get my other work done. My sleeping pattern has been completely rocked and it is hard to find time to do the computer work. So, I am adjusting my schedule and figuring out where everything needs to fit. How, I can get enough sleep and still accomplish everything I need to do in a day.

In the shop things are going well. We are attracting a number of customers and everyone loves the look and feel of our place. Also, we have a number of volunteers signing up to help work some hours in the shop. It is a lot of fun to have people come in and look around and enjoy our place. Now we are moving forward and meeting people and blessing the community one coffee cup at a time!

Here are some pictures of our opening night.

the opening is almost here!

It has been a long time since I have updated my blog. And when I think of all that has happened this month, I don't even know where to begin. We have been extremely busy building and rebuilding and planning. The countdown to opening is almost done. We are now at opening week, 2 days left! I could go into a long explanation of all that we had to do to get the shop ready, but that description would take forever. Instead here is a photo album of all the work we have done in the shop-

progress photos

This week is opening week. We have Monday and Tuesday to finish up everything and then we open Wednesday evening with an event for kids. We continue the party all week long, including a concert on Friday and ending with yummy Brunch on Saturday.

There has been a lot of stress and pressure lately. Exhaustion has almost taken over. I really feel like I have been running on empty for a couple weeks now. But, in the midst of the exhaustion there is some excitement that we will soon be open!

A Week Of Progress

Sometimes you can spend hours and hours working and everything still looks like a crazy mess or a horribly long process that will never be completed. At least this week was not like that.

I have worked many hours in the shop trying to be the best assistant I can to our DS/Pastor/Project Coordinator/Fix everything guy. This week the task was to prepare for the floor guy and the painter. Both were coming on Friday. Since we have a floor with more waves than the California cost and spots with a drop so dangerous it could be part of the Mavericks surf tournament, we had a lot of prep work to do before the floor guy came to lay the foundation layer. And so the entire week was spent laying a geometrical nightmare of plywood to create a level and stable foundation. Of course with my illogical mind this whole process looked like one confusing mess to me. It became my job to help lift and move boards and to make sure they were screwed down well. Along the way I also did some small finishing tasks to the walls.

Finally after many, many hours of labor, cleaning, and preparing I met the floor guy Friday morning and this time he went to work. After we spent days ripping six layers of carpet, wood, and cement flooring out, it's kind of defeating to watch almost that many layers being put back on. Well, not on every part of the floor but on some of the lowest parts. Still it makes you think why didn't we just stop at the first layer of carpet. That would have saved us a lot of work. Well, most often it takes a lot of work to do a job right. We will now have an even floor throughout the shop and there is not the threat of the floor breaking beneath us anymore. So, yes all of that work may have been hard and long and set us back on our time schedule, but we will be able to guarantee that our customers won't fall through the floor. And even though it does not have the final flooring on it, it does look like a beautiful glassy sea instead of a coast line.

Friday evening I also met the painter and left him to spray the first primer layer. I am so excited to walk into the shop on Saturday and see how bright the white makes it. Also, I am excited that the amount of dust in the shop has dropped enormously.

So this week we see progress because it is beginning to look like a building we can use instead of a construction site (as long as you don't look in the kitchen, bathrooms, or storage rooms).

Yes, there has been a lot of sweat, blood, and tears (I really did start to cry when the vacuum cleaner died on me with still half the shop to go). Like anything in life it takes getting some bruises and shedding some tears to grow to a better place. :)

Help! We Need Some Supplies

Right now we are in the middle of remodeling the main cafe room and building the coffee bar. It has been a long hard process.  This week I met with the CEO of an industrial kitchen supplier here in Denmark. He is in the process of drawing plans and providing a list of suggestions for the kitchen appliances. The blessing of this is that the Founder and CEO of this company (H. W. Larsen) has come to see our place because they were interested in our idea of a non-profit shop and are preparing all plans free of charge. But, they can not provide us with all appliances free of charge. So, we are looking for help in being able to purchase much needed Kitchen and Bar items. These prices are actually discounted prices that they will give to us. Here is the list of items-
